Palos Verdes school board to hold meeting on parcel taxes
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District board will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss strategy with a consultant on whether and when to seek renewal of parcel taxes that expire in 2013.
Together, the district’s two parcel taxes bring in $7 million each year to the cash-strapped school system. The taxes cost property owners $374 annually.
No decision will be made at today’s meeting on when to bring a renewal to voters, who last approved extending one of the taxes in June 2009. A vote is set for the July 28 board meeting.
Timing the election could be tricky because the district is facing heat from some critics of a still-developing parent proposal for stadium lighting at Peninsula High – and because some Palos Verdes Estates residents are upset over a district lawsuit that aims to bring about the sale of vacant land in a residential neighborhood.
The 4 p.m. meeting is at Malaga Cove Administration Center, 375 Via Almar, Palos Verdes Estates.
