Redondo Beach school board votes to end 6th grade at Jefferson Elementary

The Redondo Beach school board voted 3-2 Tuesday night to eliminate sixth grade at Jefferson Elementary, the last grammar school in the district that hasn’t converted to a K-5.

The move means that come 2012-13, Jefferson parents will no longer have the option of sending their sixth-graders to either the elementary school or Parras Middle School.

A group of parents had opposed the plan, saying middle school can be an inappropriate setting for sixth-graders, both socially and academically.

Administrators said the current setup is a logistical quandary: Trying to discern how many students are staying and leaving – and then staffing appropriately – is more trouble then it’s worth, they say, especially when demand is low.

Voting against the proposal were board members Laura Emdee and Jane Diehl. Emdee favored a plan that gave parents a firm deadline of March 1 to decide, and then only keeping sixth grade at the school if at least 28 students enrolled.
