Teachers get extra money for supplies

Hundreds of teachers at 12 Hartford public schools have received special $200 debit cards to help them buy extra school supplies to boost programs in their classrooms.

About 500 teachers received the special cards this week under the Evolution 1 Teacher Dollars Program , in which donors give money to help educators afford more supplies without spending their own money.

The program is in its sixth year in Hartford schools.

The donors range from individuals and corporations to parent-teacher associations and nonprofit charitable foundations.

The debit cards can be used only at selected merchants who sell classroom supplies, and leftover money in June is rolled over into the following academic year’s cards.

The schools are selected based on making marked improvement in their students’ academic achievement.
